Yep it sucks. Seems like it's constantly getting worse. My problem with it is that all the crap moving through the most recent 50 so quickly pushes the noncrap with it. 5 years ago a submission would get at least a dozen reviews no matter how awful, yesterday I won daily 3rd and got 7.

Yeah, I put the NG portal to the test the other day. I submited a Black screen, and it passed with a 3.16 (and its still at an 2.8 something).... that is REALLY SAD! I mean come on! A BLACK SCREEN! No animation to it.
The passing score should be raised to 2 AT least. I know EXACTLY what your talking about though. Anyone can pass a flash now a days. IT takes the glory of new artists, passing their first flash less honorable. Cause now you get those total faggots thinking they are the best animators ever cause NG standard has lowered so much they they accept them. You cant change the votes, but you can change the passing score.

Yeah I had a blog like this awhile back, it's annoying but there isn't much we can do to stop it. The thing about art is people can use the "everyone has different taste" excuse to justifiy an over rated piece, or just about anything for that matter, that goes for both music and animation I suppose. Nothing we can do to stop it, but that doesn't make it right.
I guess the thing viewers don't realise is that while personal taste plays a factor, if you know a bit about what you are criticizing there is also a pretty black and white skill scale to judge by.

Um... you obviously haven't B/P'ed enough submissions to have even a remotely good idea about the ongoing quality of portal submissions. So no.
I dunno, I never bother trying to blam cartoons in the portal, since so many people co-author so that they can't get blammed (or thats how I remember it being). Plus people these days get all their friends to vote 5's on their cartoon. I also don't remember it being that hard to get into the portal, but then again I do videogame parodies, which means people boost the score for their love of the game.(not intentional, I just like making parodies)
I submitted one thing to the portal one time, once upon a time. I got a 1.28 on it. It was a fight with sprites that I think was actually well done. No real background or sound effects to it, but it was kind of a test to see if i could do it. I wouldn't say getting blammed discouraged me but I felt like I wanted to only do it once.
i agree that times have changed when it comes to whats good and whats not. i remember when i was younger, anything that was remotely spam that passed was deleted soon after passing and now, they just stay here. Wish tom would add a whistle option for spam flashes.

I agree with you on the fanfics, but honestly, some of the YTP's on Youtube are worth watching, because they're hilarious.
But I will agree with you on Newgrounds. The system is corrupt. I am uploading a purposely crappy 20 second Madness/Halo parody right now, and I know it will pass because anything that has Halo will pass.

Yeah... This kinda pisses me off too. Sometimes i'll get bored and look up a random idea, I'll get several results and get maybe 1/10 to be worth a 2. I think you're right, people are mindless zombies, are we all mindless zombies? In some ways, yes. If we see something by a certain author, we might not hesitate to click "5", but you can't say everything's crap.
I tried flash about a year ago... holy crap time flies, anyway, about a year ago, I tried making some simple animations. I was a TOTAL newbie(newbie as in beginner, not noob, i'm very annoying about this topic) to Flash and had to look at several bits of tutorials constantly. I came up with some things that would've, sadly, probably passed.
I don't think it's right for people to do that. The people I find the MOST repulsive in this sense are the people that vote 5 for a group or a club, and 0 for a sprite movie just because they're sprites(sprites are still art, they were even revered more than art for several years). People should focus on a few things when deciding a submission's fate. 1.Graphics- Does it look incredibly kickass? or like a little kid drew it? 2.Sound-Is it butchered?(that's all I got for sound) 3.Originality-Is it new? Is it fresh? It is the same rehashed crap we get every 3 seconds? 4.Art Style-Is it a good style? 5. Personal Preference- Does it appeal to you? Is it good/bad? Or are you just saying it's good/bad because someone else did it or it's unpopular at the time?

People sometimes find doing it funny for personal amusement, my own self feels the need to beat the living hell outta people like this(Stopped by ol' Johnny Law), but I never actually do anything do to age basis.(Off Topic but... Age is unimportant in maturity, more mature people tend to be older, but everyone blames it on 10 year olds when they could be 18, or 8)
